Removing a broken key from a euro cylinder lock

One of the most frustrating things that can happen to you when you put your key into the lock of your upvc door is that it snaps in the lock.  Quite a few locksmiths in Bradford have told me they have seen this happening quite a lot.  It could be due to the cold weather or the upvc door needs to be adjusted, or it could be that the key has become brittle. If you find your lock hard to use it would be well worth contacting your local locksmith before the problem gets worse.

So this is what you do:

1.  If the broken piece of key in the lock is not straight you will have to turn it until it is.

2.  Once straightened, use your spare key or any universal key that will fit the key way.

3.  Place your key at the opposite end of the lock, but not all the way in.

4.  Using your thumb or the butt end of a screwdriver push or tap the key all the way in.

5.  The broken piece of key should have come out, if it hasn’t the key way with the broken piece of key in it was not quite straight, try again.

If you are unable to do this contact your local locksmith who will be happy to assist you.
